The many informal trails and old forest roads wind through lodgepole pine forests and along the shores of Boulder Lake. Many of these easy trails are appropriate for families and casual hikers, though the trailhead also provides access to the much more difficult and multi-day backcountry hikes. For those wanting to fish in the lake, the trails provide an easy walk to the water.

In addition to the beautiful surroundings, wildlife sightings are also common along the Boulder Lake trails. Birds, deer, and other small animals are plentiful and can be spotted along many of the quiet paths. With its close proximity to the city of Boulder, this trailhead offers great options for relaxed mountain hikes.

New Fork Trailhead

The New Fork Trailhead is located along the edge of the Wind River Range foothills and the northeast shore of Lower New Fork Lake. Trails from the trailhead follow the shoreline of the lake and extend along the New Fork River. The terrain is mostly gentle with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, wetlands, and sagebrush flats.

This area is especially popular for watching wildlife with moose, deer, waterfowl, and songbirds being frequently spotted near the water. The calm lake and river scenery make the trail ideal for easy hikes, photography, fishing, or picnicking.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a popular local climbing area known for its impressive rock formations and accessible routes. The site is made of distinctive, pillar-like rock walls that resemble a natural stone circle, giving the area its name. Climbers are drawn to it for its variety of sport and trad routes, which range from beginner-friendly lines to more technical climbs.

The relatively short approaches and open setting also make Stonehenge appealing for quick climbing sessions as well as photography and taking in the view of the surrounding plains and mountains.

Climbing in the Cirque of the Towers is considered one of the most iconic and rewarding alpine climbing experiences in North America. Located in the Wind River Range, the Cirque is famed for its three dramatic spires: Pingora Peak, Wolf’s Head, and Warbonnet Peak. Climbers from around the world come here for the area’s classic multi-pitch trad routes, clean granite, and sustained technical challenges.
